The Bakersfield City School District
On
Friday, June 7, 2013, nearly 200 District personnel, community members,
family and friends gathered at the DoubleTree Hotel to honor the 2013
class of inductees into the Bakersfield City School District (BCSD) Hall
of Fame. The Hall of Fame Banquet included live music, a delicious
meal, great conversation and the presentation of this year’s inductees.
Over
2,000 Bakersfield City School District eighth graders walked across the
stage in honor of their completion of Junior High/Middle School on May
30, 2012. The ceremonies were inspiring and emphasized that college is
the greater goal for all our students.
On May 16, 2013, retirees from
the Bakersfield City School District (BCSD) were honored at the 27th Annual Retirement Banquet held at the DoubleTree Hotel. BCSD Board
Members and administrators were present to honor District team members
who dedicated much of their lives to serving the children of the
District. The memorable evening included over 180 family members,
friends, and colleagues who had gathered to celebrate each retiree's
commitment to public education.
On Friday, May 10, 2013, nearly
200 special needs students gathered at McKinley School for the 32nd
Annual Coach’s Choice Track Meet. This event allows orthopedically
impaired students requiring adaptive Physical Education (PE), the chance
to compete with students of similar needs from all over the Bakersfield
City School District (BCSD). The competitors came from 23 schools
across the District and competed in events designed specifically for
their needs such as tennis ball throw, Frisbee throw, and several
different races.

Congratulations
to Maria Villareal and Robert Hodash for being named Teachers of the
Year in two separate ceremonies. Both teachers were selected from a
field of nominees across the county; Mrs. Villareal by the Jim Burke
Education Foundation and Mr. Hodash by the Kern County Superintendent of
Schools (KCSOS).
Bakersfield City School District is proud to announce that a Chipman Jr. High team took First Place in the National History Day California Finals. The winning team, Sadie Armijo, Stevie McNabb, Miguel Vargas, Dylan Pearson and Jake Beardsley won in the Junior Group Performance category with their presentation entitled, "No Turning Back" which detailed events leading to the end of World War II. The Chipman team competed against 21 other teams from across the State and now moves to the National Competition in Maryland, June 9-13, 2013.
On Friday, April 5, 2013,
Bakersfield City School District special needs students gathered at the
Rafer Johnson Center track to compete in the 40th Annual Rafer Johnson
Track Meet. This annual event gathers severely handicapped students
from around the district and gives them the opportunity to participate
in Track and Field events such as, sprints, relays and long jump, as
well as disc throwing and "hurdles."
