32nd Annual Coach's Choice Track Meet
On Friday, May 10, 2013, nearly
200 special needs students gathered at McKinley School for the 32nd
Annual Coach’s Choice Track Meet. This event allows orthopedically
impaired students requiring adaptive Physical Education (PE), the chance
to compete with students of similar needs from all over the Bakersfield
City School District (BCSD). The competitors came from 23 schools
across the District and competed in events designed specifically for
their needs such as tennis ball throw, Frisbee throw, and several

Two Teachers of the Year!

Congratulations
to Maria Villareal and Robert Hodash for being named Teachers of the
Year in two separate ceremonies. Both teachers were selected from a
field of nominees across the county; Mrs. Villareal by the Jim Burke
Education Foundation and Mr. Hodash by the Kern County Superintendent of
Schools (KCSOS).Chipman Junior High School - National History Day State Winners
Bakersfield City School District is proud to announce that a Chipman Jr. High team took First Place in the National History Day California Finals. The winning team, Sadie Armijo, Stevie McNabb, Miguel Vargas, Dylan Pearson and Jake Beardsley won in the Junior Group Performance category with their presentation entitled, "No Turning Back" which detailed events leading to the end of World War II. The Chipman team competed against 21 other teams from across the State and now moves to the National Competition in Maryland, June 9-13, 2013.40th Annual Rafer Johnson Track Meet
On Friday, April 5, 2013,
Bakersfield City School District special needs students gathered at the
Rafer Johnson Center track to compete in the 40th Annual Rafer Johnson
Track Meet. This annual event gathers severely handicapped students
from around the district and gives them the opportunity to participate
in Track and Field events such as, sprints, relays and long jump, as
well as disc throwing and "hurdles."Congressman McCarthy visits Washington
On Thursday, March 23, 2013,
U.S. Congressman Kevin McCarthy, California’s 23rd District
Representative visited Washington... the Middle
School he attended in his youth. Taking time from his busy schedule, Mr.
McCarthy spoke to all the 8th grade students about his position and
responsibilities as House Majority Whip and reviewed the structure of
our federal government and the duties of the separate branches.2013 BCSD Track Meet
For the first time in several years the Bakersfield City School District (BCSD) held its annual District-wide track meet on a Saturday, April 13, to allow distance runners the opportunity to compete on the same day and in the same venue as other track and field contestants. With over 500 student athletes gathered at Bakersfield College's Memorial Stadium, the field was a flurry of activity as athletes competed in the various events.
