Developing Capacity in the Academic Support Teams (October)
On October 8, 2007 the AIA Team and West Ed held a training
for the Principals and their Academic Support Teams to help develop the next
steps for the Pathway to Teaching and Learning. The training provided the structure in
establishing rigorous objectives. Using
the Plan - Observe- Discuss Cycle the teams were shown how to use this tool in
conjunction with the revised Blooms Taxonomy.
The teams were specifically shown how to draw out the measurable verbs in
establishing their lesson objectives.
The principals were asked to display the Pathway to Teaching and
Learning modules that had been trained at their school sites so that the DL’s can
gain knowledge of what support can be now be offered. Principals were shown an example of how to display
observational data with evidence using a template. They were also shown how to prepare the
schedule for the Plan - Observe- Discuss Cycle. The DL’s will continue to be involved in the
process of supporting the principals at each site. AIA Team - Providing Support in the Pathway (September)
On September 4, 2007, all school principals participated in a follow up training to the Pathway. The AIA team continues to provide the structure for the successful implementation of the Pathway. Huck Fitterer, along with his West Ed staff took the principals through many excercises including the classification of specific examples under each of the six dimensions of the revised Blooms Taxonomy. Specifically, principals were asked to bring their documentation of the Pathway to share and discuss progress. Many principals continued to share a positive outlook on the implementation of the Pathway. All principals explained that four of the modules have been delivered to the staff and that documentation and data gathering is in progress. The training focused on providing the principals with the, Plan - Observe - Discuss Cycle. This cycle provides the structure to ensure that learning is at the correct level of difficulty for all students, that teachers are providing high quality instruction, and that teachers are given specific feedback on their ability to provide high quality instruction. Overall, the AIA team is quite pleased with the progress of the Pathway implementation. We will continue to monitor each school site to provide the needed support.
