The Bakersfield City School District, Special Education Division, recognizes, supports, respects, and values individual differences in an educational process that enables students with Autism Spectrum Disorder to become contributing members in their communities. The mission of the Autism Program, is to provide a wide variety of research-based methods and "best practices" interventions to meet the unique needs of students who have Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD).

Programs for students with ASD are designed to address the core social-communicative disorder, as well as meet the educational, sensory, and behavioral needs of each student. Educational services are agreed upon by the Individual Education Program (IEP) team or Individual Family Service Plan (IFSP) team. Services are provided in the least restrictive environment where the child is able to participate and learn. Students who have ASD and the ability to benefit from general education curriculum are educated in general education at that student's school of residence.

Training and Staff Development
In addition to direct services for students, the Bakersfield City School District's Special Education Division SELPA also provides many opportunities for both school staff and parents to receive education and training in a wide variety of autism-related topics. Autism Competency Certification
The SELPA operates Autism Competency programs for teachers and instructional assistants who work or may work with children who have ASD. For information on the Autism Competency program, call the Special Education Division at (661) 631-5863 and ask for the program manager who coordinates services for the ARS program.

Autism Resources
The SELPA provides an Autism Resources website that contains a wealth of information, links to other recommended websites, and "downloadable" materials to assist families and teachers to produce picture schedules, etc. To access the Autism Resources webpage, click here.
