Oral Language Festival Winners '07-'08
The
BCSD Oral Language Festival provides an opportunity for students to
enjoy interpretations of literary works through reading, writing,
listening and speaking. Students choose from a broad selection of
titles, which can be either serious or humorous. First thru fourth
place winners will go on to compete at the Kern County Oral Language
Festival at Standard Middle School on February 23, 2008.

BCSD's Kern County Spelling Bee Winners
The results of the County spelling bee, held February 10th, are in and our students were outstanding. The winners are as follows:

Spelling Bee Winners Announced
We are very proud of all the competitors in this year's District-wide Spelling Bees. Each student worked very hard to prepare and the results were evident.

Bakersfield City School District receives Golden Bell Award
The California School Board Association presented BCSD Food
Services with the prestigious Golden Bell Award. The Award recognized
the campaign, “Jammin’ Sam Health and Nutrition Awareness”. The
campaign was headed by Director of Food services, Wayne Wong. Congratulations Food Services! Richard Rodriguez helps set Music Standards
Curran Middle School Instrumental Music Teacher Richard Rodriguez participated in the Music Standard Setting Panel for the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing in Sacramento in October. This 10-member panel established California Single Subject Examination passing scores for teachers seeking credentials in the area of music. This new examination created an alignment of national standards in music with those of California.Mr. Rodriguez also traveled to Washington D.C. in December to participate in a meeting at the National Association for Music Education(MENC) headquarters to bring together leading educators and performers in the mariachi field to trade ideas and discuss the many possibilities open to mariachi music making in the schools and communities of the United States. A 13-member panel discussed the breadth and quality of what mariachi music would bring to the 120,000 strong membership of MENC, and likewise what this professional organization can do to enhance this great cultural tradition so popular with students from Latino communities, as well as students of all races and ethnicities.
Governor selects Aida Molina for State Commission
BCSD Administrator Aida Molina was appointed in November by Governor Schwarzenegger to the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing. Mrs. Molina will remain in her position as a Reading First coordinator for the District while she simultaneously fulfills her duties on the State commission. The commission sets professional standards, assesses the overall quality of California teachers and oversees examinations for teaching credentials and advancement certificates. Mrs. Molina is excited about her opportunity to ensure that we have highly qualified teachers in our communities.
Oral Language Festival Results
The BCSD Oral Language Festival provides an
opportunity for students to enjoy interpretations of literary works
through reading, writing, listening and speaking. Students choose from
a broad selection of titles, which can be either serious or humorous.
They can perform solo, duo or as a group. The categories are Serious
Interpretation Solo; Serious Interpretation Duo; Humorous
Interpretation Solo; Humorous Interpretation Duo; and Verse Choir
(3-8 students). The top four BCSD winners from each of the five
categories in each division are eligible to compete in the Kern County
Oral Language Festival, which will be held at Standard Middle School on
Saturday, January 29, 2005.

Erin George Receives CRA Award
Erin George, College Heights School academic coach for the Reading First Program, received the Constance McCullough Research Award on November 6, 2004 at the Delegates Assembly Breakfast during the California Reading Association Conference held in San Jose, California. She received the award for her outstanding research in the field of reading. Ms. George, who completed her masters degree and thesis at CSUB, submitted her thesis as her entry. It involved kindergarten and first grade students" phonological awareness and the correlation to students" reading ability. Her findings confirmed that students with phonological awareness strongly correlated to successes in reading and those teachers" with knowledge about phonological awareness had a positive effect in the students" performances.
Lillian Tafoya Honored with Awards
Lillian Tafoya, Bakersfield City School District Board of Education member, received two very special honors this year. On October 2, 2004, Mrs.Tafoya was elected by fellow members as the president of the California Latin School Board Members Association at the Business Unity 2004 Conference. She will be the general director for all of California. The Association"s goal is to help meet the needs of Hispanic students and provide them with the opportunity to advance equally in education. On October 29, 2004, she received the SDistinguished Alumni award during a homecoming celebration at her alma mater, Highlands University in Las Vegas, New Mexico, for her nationally acclaimed work as a public school administrator and teacher.
Sandra Yoon - Collaboration for Success
Sandra Yoon, Library Media Services Coordinator, recently had an
article published in the California School Library Association Journal,
Fall 2004 issue, regarding the California Young Reader Medal (CYRM)
Program. The story was written in cooperation with Carol Lopez Dorksen,
Coordinator, District Library Services, Kings Canyon Unified School
District in Reedley, and Lori Lim, Library Media Teacher, Evergreen
School District, in San Jose. Their article, entitled Collaboration at
All Levels: The California Young Reader Medal Program, highlighted
various activities to provide a multitude of collaborative
