Even Start Family Literacy

The purpose of the William F. Goodling Even Start Family Literacy Program (Even Start) is to help break the cycle of poverty and illiteracy by improving educational opportunities for low-income families. We help parents gain the skills needed to become full partners in the education of their children by planning and coordinating services in the following four areas:

·        early childhood education

·        adult literacy or adult basic education including ESL classes

·        parenting education

·        parent and child interactive literacy activities

School Readiness Initiative

BCSD’s School Readiness Initiative (SRI), funded by First 5 Kern and First 5 California, is designed to implement programs that improve the transition from early care settings to elementary school and increase the schools’ and communities’ capacity to promote the success of young children.

East Bakersfield Community Collaborative

The East Bakersfield Community Collaborative is a broad-based, grassroots, coalition formed in 1992 and made up of East Bakersfield residents, landlords, business owners, community-based agency representatives, health service providers, churches, law-enforcement personnel, school personnel, and representatives from both the city and county, working together to make East Bakersfield and its county islands a safe and nurturing environment for families, children, and businesses.
