Even Start Family Literacy Program

The purpose of the Even Start Family Literacy Program is to help break the cycle of poverty and illiteracy by improving educational opportunities of low-income families.  Even Start funds local education agencies and community based organizations to plan and coordinate services to help parents gain the skills needed to become full partners in the education of their young children.  Even Start integrates (1) adult literacy or adult education, (2) parenting education, (3) parent and child interactive literacy activities and (4) early childhood education into a unified, four-component family literacy program. 

EVEN START and BAKERSFIELD CITY SCHOOL DISTRICT invite families to participate in:

  • ESL Classes (English as a Second Language)Even Start Logo:
  • Computer Classes (afternoon only)
  • Parenting Education
  • Parent and Child Interactive Activities
  • Early Childhood Education for children 0-5 years of age or
  • Tutoring for K through 2nd grade students.

Early Childhood Education:
Monday - Friday
8:00 am to 11:30 am
11:45 am to 3:15 pm


Classes coincide with the days of the regular school year and summer school.
