Migrant Education Even Start (M.E.E.S.)
The Migrant Education Even Start (M.E.E.S.) Program is a statewide, home-based and school-based family literacy education model. It is authorized under No Child Left Behind, Title 1, Part C, Section 1304(6) (C). This program is designed to help break the cycle of poverty and improve the literacy of participating migrant families by integrating early childhood education, adult literacy or adult basic education, and parenting education into a unified family literacy program.
M.E.E.S. Services
Educational services are provided to migratory families; parents receive services to enhance literacy levels, expand parenting skills, and learn English-as-a-second language; children, zero to seven years old, are provided early childhood and preschool services.
M.E.E.S. project services are based on two models:
• M.E.E.S. and First Five Site-base
• First Five Home-base
M.E.E.S. and First Five Site-base
Parents and children attend classes together at a school or center site. Classes include English as a second language, literacy (English and native language), parenting skills for parents, early childhood education, and kindergarten readiness skills.
Requirements
• Families participating in M.E.E.S. must qualify for the Migrant Program.
• Children must be between birth and age seven.
• Parents are required to participate in parenting classes and PAC time.
First Five Home-base
Project teachers and assistants work in the home with migratory parents and their children providing parenting skills and early childhood education services.
Requirements
• Families participating in First Five must qualify for the Migrant Program.
• Children must be between birth and age five.
• Parents and children must participate together in project activities.
