The beginning of this New Year coincides with my first days on the job and both of these new starts are filled with terrific potential. It is a privilege to join the Bakersfield City School District family. I find it heartwarming to be part of a district that is so strongly committed to empowering its students with a well-rounded education and the tools they'll need for the rest of their lives.
In my relatively short time with the district, I have been continuously impressed with the high caliber of dedicated teachers, administrators, and staff that help to provide quality learning opportunities for all students.
My immediate priority is to listen to your perspectives on the work ahead of us and learn from your experiences in trying to improve our service to students. In the next few weeks and months, I will spend time connecting with a variety of stakeholders in our district to help build trust and mutual respect and gain insight into our large organization and its daily work. This will involve a series of meetings with district departments, schools, and parent and community organizations. I look forward to spending considerable time listening and learning about local issues, community-school initiatives, and the current challenges we face in these difficult economic times. The outcome of these meetings will shape the District's future goals and direction.
In my many conversations about BCSD's new motto, "One District, One Team, One Voice," I can feel the optimism and enthusiasm it helps to define. I am fully committed to building on this momentum and striving with each of you to provide all our students with the educational excellence they deserve.
