Parent Volunteers Recognized
On
Friday, May 11 the Bakersfield City School District honored parent
volunteers from every school in the district at the 25th annual Parent
Volunteers of the Year Ceremony. As this was the 25th anniversary, the
room was lined with large photos of winners from the past and Susan
Dunn, the very first Parent Volunteer of the Year in 1987, addressed

Friday, May 4, Ms. Jordan’s and Ms. Scott’s Pre-K class at Horace Mann,
honored Superintendent Dr. Robert Arias, Executive Director of Academic

It’s
testing season and schools around the District were busy helping to
motivate students to do their best and feel confident that they would be
successful. These efforts took a variety of shapes and sizes, each
showcasing the creativity and talents of the principal and staff at the

March 24, 2012, English Language Learner Services sponsored the 20th
Annual ELL Celebration for newly reclassified students. English
learners who have demonstrated proficiency in conversational and
academic English based on state assessments were recognized for reaching

Recently,
a cafeteria full of cheering students welcomed Olympic Swimming
Medalist, Gabe Woodward to Mt. Vernon Elementary School. He was on hand
to congratulate and motivate 275 students who had successfully
participated in the Peacemaker Sports Program.Fremont's Mrs. Carter receives $1,000 grant
Recently Barbara Carter, teacher at Fremont School, was surprised by Leyla Santiago, morning news anchor from Channels 29 and 58. Mrs. Carter was chosen to receive the $1,000 'One Classroom At A Time' grant for her project titled 'Growing and Changing'.Congratulations Mrs. Carter and keep up the good work!
Pi Day – Math Bowl and Pies...
On Pi Day, March 14th (3.14), students around the district were busy taking appropriate actions for just such a day.Congratulations Franklin and Thorner Schools!
Today, State Superintendent of Public Instruction, Tom Torlakson, announced the exemplary California public elementary schools that were named 2012 California Distinguished Schools. Two BCSD schools were among only five in the county chosen for their innovative education programs that encourage students to learn and help close the achievement gap.Way to go Thorner and Franklin!

Congratulations
to Stephen Bush, a seventh grader at Downtown School for taking 1st
Place at the 58th annual Kern County Henry Greve Speech Contest held on
Thursday, March 22nd! Stephen was the first BCSD student in 13 years to
take top honors at the competition.Groundbreaking News -- 2 New Schools!
On
Thursday, March 22nd the District held a Groundbreaking Ceremony for
its two new schools, Dr. Douglas K. Fletcher Elementary and Paul L.
Cato Middle Schools. The event was attended by all the BCSD Board
Members, families of the namesakes for both schools and district staff
and community members.Service organizations donate dictionaries
Last
month, students at twenty BCSD schools received generous gifts of
dictionaries and thesauruses ("thesauri" would also be correct) from the
Bakersfield East Rotary and the Bakersfield Elks. Both organizations
donated the books to the individual students, who were able to put their
names in them and take them home.BCSD Migrant Education, Region 21 Honorees


Congratulations to this year’s honorees who will represent our region at the 33rd Annual State Migrant Parent Conference in Los Angeles on March 16-18, 2012.Janet Ulandro (Owens Primary/Intermediate), Parent of the Year; Elizabeth Inda (Chipman 8th grader), Student of the Year; and Lila Perez, (McKinley teacher), Alumnus of the Year.
Parent Engagement Task Force
On
January 31, 2012 the new BCSD Parent Engagement Task Force held its
first meeting. This Task Force is a partnership including members from
district parent committees, the community, and school and district
staff.During the first meeting members shared childhood experiences, current knowledge of parent engagement opportunities in BCSD and existing needs related to parent involvement.
Frank West and Munsey Science gets Energized
In
an effort to energize their student's interest in science, BCSD
teachers Heather Randolph at Munsey, and Tapp Hancock from Frank West,
have tapped into some generous grants from PG&E that will allow them
to offer interesting, hands-on science for their students, and
backpacks for everyone!Janie Flores - CABE Distinguished Administrator of the Year
Congratulations to Janie Flores for being selected as the Distinguished Administrator of the Year for the California Association of Bilingual Education (CABE). Janie will receive an award at the Annual CABE Conference in March.Way to go Janie!

On Wednesday, January 18th, during lunch, students at Owens Intermediate got a glimpse of the wide range of possible answers to that question at their Career Awareness Day. Francisco
Flores, a dynamic 5th grade teacher at Mt. Vernon School, was recently
honored as the California Association of Billingual Educators (CABE),
Teacher of the Year for Migrant Region 21, which serves over 2,600
migrant students at forty one schools in the Bakersfield City School
District.It’s a Solarbration!
On
Thursday, January 19th, Sierra Middle School invited district and
community guests to come to the opening ceremony and ribbon cutting for
their new 20 kilowatt solar structure. Those attending received
solar-cooked mini pizzas, UV activated nail polish and color changing
bracelets and got to see various solar science projects on display, in
other words, it was a Solarbration!BCSD -- Can you spell it? Can you use it in a sentence?
On
January 14th, 17th, and 19th, some district students were busy
polishing their p's and q's and i's before e's in preparation for

Once again the district has reason to send congratulations Aida Molina’s way. Last time was her appointment to the State Board of Education. This time, our Executive Director of Academic Improvement and Accountability has received her Ph.D. in Urban Leadership from Claremont Graduate University. On
Tuesday, January 10th Heather Brimmer's 3rd grade class, at Hort, looked like it
was still Christmas with a giant wrapped gift and room full of wide eyes
staring at the gift. The room also had some new visitors who had
brought the gift but these elves were from Chevron and one of them was
named Adam. Adam Alvidrez, Chevron public affairs representative
briefly spoke to the students and after Miss Brimmer thanked Chevron for
the grant, and a short safe-gift-opening demonstration, the box was
opened to reveal a set of electronic math quiz games for the entire
class.Stiern Novemberfest 2011
Wednesday,
November 16th, Stiern Middle School students were treated to an
afternoon of music, fun and games at the school’s giant "Novemberfest".
Students used tickets to purchase food and beverages, play games or get
their hair decorated all while enjoying a live concert by up and coming
artist Camryn. As a special incentive, students with a qualifying GPA

Welcome Dr. Rob Arias
At
a special board meeting on Monday evening, November 7th, Bakersfield
City School District Board Members voted unanimously to finalize a
contract with Dr. Robert Arias making him BCSD's new superintendent
beginning January 9th, 2012!After the board meeting, Dr. Arias and the Board Members held a press conference in the lobby of the board room answering questions from television, radio and newspaper reporters. Once the media had asked all their questions, everyone was invited to the PDC for a reception held in honor of Dr. Arias who was joined by his wife Nancy and their son Matt, his parents, his sister and his niece.
Nichols Celebrates Half a Century!
On
Thursday, October 13, Colonel Nichols School invited district
administrators, parents, former students and even neighbors that walk
the track to join them in celebrating their 50th anniversary. At
the ceremony, students learned about Colonel Howard Nichols' life, his
patriotism and service to our nation and his involvement in the
development of the neighborhood around the school and his donation of
the land for the school and Seimon Park next door.Hort, National Gold Award of Distinction Winner
On
Wednesday, October 12, BCSD administrators and representatives from
local, state and national government joined Hort Elementary School to
celebrate their recent USDA Gold Award of Distinction, an honor that
only 2 other schools in the nation enjoyed in October. Representatives
from the USDA and California Department of Education presented
certificates to the school and toured the cafeteria before sitting down
to a healthy lunch with students and Principal Steve Robinson. They also
saw, first hand, some of Hort's nutrition education taking place in the
classroom.Chavez takes State Honors... Again
This
year, only three schools in Kern County were chosen by the California
Department of Education as 2011 Title I Academic Achievement Award
Schools and one of them is BCSD's Chavez Magnet School, who has won this
award for the second year in a row!Williams' Success is a Team Story
When
asked why Williams Elementary School was one of the top 10 schools in
the district for test score gains over the last three years, Principal
Jennifer Payne said emphatically, "I know everyone says this, but here,
it's the absolute truth - we really do have the very best staff
possible. Every single one of the teachers here works to their full
capacity and they're all open to any suggestions that might help their

Erick
Casallas, Emerson Middle School reading and English Language
Development teacher has been selected by Kern County Superintendent of
Schools as Teacher of the Year and will now represent Kern County in the

Over
the last three years, Curran Middle School has been among the top ten
improved schools in the district on API scores. This type of consistent
progress, over time, is the key to student success. So how do they do
it?Compton's Success - It all started with teams
Since
2007, Compton Jr. High has been making steady API test score gains. In
fact, their growth has put them among the top ten gainers in the
District. When asked to what he attributed his school’s progress,
Principal Alex Soriano was quick to say, “It all goes back to teams –

The
2011 class of the Bakersfield City School District Hall of Fame was
honored Friday, March 25th, at the Hall of Fame Gala. Inductees, their
families and friends, district personnel, and community members gathered

Wednesday, March 2 over 280 BCSD students from 25 schools put their
math skills to the test, competing individually and as teams in BCSD’s
25th Annual Math Bowl.Stella Hills - Kern County's Biggest API Gain
For
Stella Hills Elementary students and staff, the State’s most recent
Academic Performance Index scores were the cause of much celebration and
pride. When the scores were published it was revealed that Stella Hills
made bigger gains than any elementary or middle school in Kern County!Washington Does the Math

schools continue their pursuit of No Child Left Behind’s ever
increasing test score standards, some schools consistently rise to the
occasion. This story is the first in a series highlighting the efforts

Thursday, December 9, Emerson Middle School hosted their first ever
Family Learning Night. The event was organized to help students and
parents learn strategies and gain the knowledge necessary to improve the

this year's Red Ribbon Week schools across the district took time to

October 14th, Sierra Middle School, in cooperation with the Society of
Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) and sponsored by Chevron, hosted
its 3rd Annual “Noche de Ciencias” (Family Science Night).Thorner Cloggers Best in the West

the bright carnival lights in the background and the smell of corn dogs
and deep fried twinkies in the air, the Thorner Thunderbolt Cloggers put

This
fall, students at several BCSD schools were the recipients of
dictionaries and thesauri (yes, it’s a word) from a variety of donors.Schools Welcome Community Partners
On
Friday, September 10, Bakersfield business and community leaders joined
BCSD principals for breakfast, a brief program and then a visit to the
principal’s school. It was the seventh annual Community Partners in
Education (CPIE) event held at the DoubleTree Hotel and this year nearly
every seat was filled with principals, community partners and BCSD
administrators.Curran's Golden Day
On
Tuesday, September 6, 1960 Curran Jr. High opened, welcoming its first
students to the first day of school. 50 years (and one day) later,
Curran Middle School celebrated its Golden Anniversary with an assembly
held outside on the school lawn.Jefferson gets the Right Tools
During
the first week of school, Jefferson Elementary first and second graders
met Jefferson’s new community partner -- AT&T Pioneers, an
organization of retired AT&T employees. First thing Thursday
morning all the students in first and second grade lined up in the
cafeteria where they were given bags of school supplies including
notebooks, dictionaries, crayons, colored pencils, scissors, glue

Last
week nearly 27,000 children exchanged their skateboards and flip flops
for backpacks and uniforms as the Bakersfield City School District went

While
many BCSD students and staff enjoyed the summer break, the District’s
Maintenance and Operations Department did anything but take a break.
They shifted into high gear taking care of maintenance and upgrade

Summer Bridge
For the eighth year in a row BCSD has spent five weeks of the
summer helping incoming kindergarten students prepare for the next 13
years of their lives. In a program called Summer Bridge, students with
no preschool experience are given the opportunity to come to school,
experience school processes and schedules and learn some concepts that

The Color of Fruit
…and
vegetables. In May, third and fourth graders at Fremont Elementary
were treated to a special nutrition presentation called Eat Your
Rainbow. Presented by district produce supplier, Fresh Point and the
BCSD Food Services Department the program was meant to familiarize
students with a wide variety of fruits and vegetables with the ultimate

Carbonated Science!
As
the end of school approached in May, students at a couple of BCSD
schools explored the hidden secrets of their favorite fizzy drinks.
Soda pop science was the topic at both science fairs, and those in
attendance were able to participate in several experiments that examine

Graduations 2010
This
year, as in so many years past, over 2200 Bakersfield City School District 8th
Graders walked across stages around the district in honor of their
completion of Junior High/Middle School. But things were a bit

Stella Hills Eagles Say No to Drugs
As
the school year drew to a close, Principal Jon Hughes and the Stella
Hills student body spent a cool, May morning pledging to live their
lives free from drug, alcohol and tobacco abuse. They were joined by
community leaders as they recited their drug free pledge then marched
in a parade around the track showing off the colorful banners each

12th Annual Academic Pentathlon Winners
For the twelfth year in a row almost 300 fourth, fifth and
sixth grade students from across the district met at Stiern Middle School to see who would take
home the gold (and silver and bronze) at the Twelfth Annual Academic

70 Years of History

BCSD Leading the Way
There’s
been a great deal of discussion about technology in California
classrooms, but Bakersfield City School District is the first to make
it a district-wide reality. Working with Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, on
September 21, the District launched Learning Village, a revolutionary

What Happens After School?
At
25 school sites in the BCSD over 2,700 students participate in the
After School Education and Safety Program (ASESP). ASESP is designed

Welcome Back Principals!
Friday, July 31st marked the first day of the school year for Bakersfield City School District principals and administrators who were back on duty for a couple of days of training and instruction. BCSD Board of Education President, Jerry C. Tate, was on hand at the opening session to welcome the returning principals and share stories from his past as teacher and principal in the district. Last
week over 2,300 BCSD 8th grade students participated in graduation
ceremonies across the district. From the Fox Theater to the Education
Center Auditorium and anywhere that could accommodate crowds of

Congratulations to BCSD’s Allison Arnold, Science teacher at Sierra Middle School, on being named Kern County Teacher of the Year for 2008-2009! BCSD Oral Language Festival Winners
Congratulations to the 2008 Bakersfield City School District Oral Language Festival winners and their coaches! This event provides an opportunity for students to
enjoy interpretations of literary works through reading, writing,
listening and speaking. Students perform serious or humorous works of literature as assigned by their teachers. First through fourth place winners will continue on to the Kern County Oral Language Festival, which will be held on February 12th for grades 4th-6th and February 26th for grades 7th-8th at University Square.Elementary winners

BCSD Teachers Recognized by Local TV Stations
Recently two of our teachers received
awards from local television stations. Juliana Barron received the
'Teacher of the Month' award presented by My45 and Univision 39; and
Melissa Diedrich received the 'One Classroom At A Time' award from

Both Dr. Juliet Thorner Elementary School and Downtown
Elementary School celebrated their being named a 2008 California

Lifetime Perfect Attendance
At the end of the 2007-2008
school year, 5 BCSD students achieved Lifetime Perfect Attendance.
What this means is that they had perfect attendance from Kindergarten
through 8th grade; 9 years which translates to 1,620 days of school.To find out who these students are, click here.
10th Annual Academic Pentathlon
For the tenth time in ten
years almost 300 fourth, fifth and sixth grade students from across the
district met to see who would take home the gold (and silver and
bronze) at the tenth annual Academic Pentathlon. Designed to generate
the same kind of enthusiasm and school pride usually reserved for

Healthy Kids Club Celebration
During the 2007-2008 school
year the Bakersfield City School District Food Services and School Health and Neighborhood Support Programs piloted a new program called “Healthy Kids Club”
where students met on a volunteer basis during their lunch hour once a
week. At these meetings a nutrition lesson was taught by our nursing
staff utilizing the Dairy Council educational materials. At the end of the program a wellness celebration was held at Stiern Middle School.To read more and see pictures from the celebration, click here.
Frank West Teacher Receives $1,000 Grant
Diane Hislop was surprised to see a news reporter and camera
crew show up to her class to present to her the "One Classroom At A

52nd Annual Honor Concert
Over 600 district students
were featured at this year's BCSD Junior High/Middle School Honor
Concert and Honor Art Exhibition held at the Rabobank Convention Center.The concert featured performances by the district's Festival Orchestra under the direction of Ed Hughes, the Honor Orchestra directed by Albert Jeung, Honor Band directed by Gayle Bentley, and the Honor Choir under the direction of Christopher Borges.
