Student Donates Hair to Locks of Love

Katrina: 5th grader Alyssa Gonzales has a new look! The new look is not because she wanted a change; rather she was doing an act of kindness. “I wanted to do something for another person” said Alyssa. She cut her waist-length hair to give to an organization that makes wigs for students who have lost their hair due to illness.

BCSD Donates  $42,490 for Katrina Relief

Hands: BCSD students wanting to help fellow students affected by Hurricane Katrina, decided to add to the efforts of their parents, uncles, grandparents, and neighbors. So, they organized their own fundraisers throughout the District and donated $42,490 to the Red Cross, Salvation Army, and Operation School Bell.

All around the district, students organized, set goals, and collected donations in different ways.  One school teamed up with local retailer, Guarantee Shoe Center, who was matching up to $1,000 of funds collected for Katrina relief. The students at that school started collecting pennies, dimes, nickels, and quarters in hopes of reaching the  $1,000 maximum. One student actually brought in all of her allowance in order to help another less fortunate student.  Others did extra chores around the house to get that extra cash, and some looked under their couches to give a helping hand. At the end of the drive, the school was proud to see that they had actually exceeded their goal of $1,000.

In another school, students made bracelets from scratch that they sold for a donation. Students not only bought the bracelets, but they donated their time to make sure they had enough bracelets to meet their school’s goal of helping the families in need.

We are very proud of our students for giving a helping hand to their neighbors in need. They truly went above and beyond the call of duty, while still keeping up with their homework. Great job BCSD students!

Pennies for Patients

Pennies: April 2005 was a busy month for the Horace Mann Mustangs. They participated in the “Pennies for Patients” program that is sponsored by the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Students raised a little over $1,300, with 2 classes raising over $150.00 each.

Students not only donated but also had other sponsors help out. Thank you, Mustangs!
