Measure "G"

Bg: The Board has unanimously adopted a resolution placing a $100 million bond measure for voter approval on the November 7th ballot to repair all of its existing 42 schools and construct three additional schools.

In Bakersfield City School District, we take pride in our students. While our academic programs continue on the right track, our facilities also play a major role in student achievement. Today, we provide 42 schools for school children in grades K through 8 within 2.5 million square feet of buildings and 400 acres of grounds throughout the City. Our oldest school in service was constructed in 1930 and our newest opened in 1993. To remain competitive, it is important to provide school facilities and modern technology to Bakersfield students comparable to those in other neighboring school districts.

Our needs are simple. We need to repair all 42 of our existing schools and build three new schools to accomodate our growing student population. The District has continued to invest from its capital and operating budget to improve and maintain our schools so that our students may become productive citizens. Our current need, however, is greater than can be funded with the existing District budget. A master facilities plan and bond program are now required in order to provide the required schools for our students. In addition, the Measure would:
  • Make the District eligible to receive over $57 million in State matching grants to modernize our schools
  • Make health, safety and security improvements at all school sites
  • Acquire and construct classrooms
