Thorner Magnet Program Wins Golden Bell Award

The Bakersfield City School District is proud to announce that the Juliet Thorner Magnet School Creative and Performing Arts Program was honored with a Golden Bell Award at the 28th Annual Golden Bell Awards program of the California School Boards Association.

Awarded in the Fine Arts category, the Juliet Thorner Magnet School Creative and Performing Arts Program operates under the direction of Margaret Gallegos, principal and Sharon Roxburgh, Magnet Specialist.  Mrs. Gallegos was present to receive the highly respected Golden Bell Award at a special ceremony during the California School Board Association's (CSBA) Awards Luncheon at the San Diego Marriot Hotel & Marina, on Saturday, December 1st, 2007.  The event was held in conjunction with the CSBA's Annual Education Conference.

Thorner’s Magnet Program was chosen for the award because it made a demonstrated difference for students in a profound and obvious way. Test results have proven the program’s mix of arts, academics, and applied technology is a highly effective approach to foster students’ problem solving, written, and oral language skills.

The CSBA Golden Bell Awards promote excellence in education by recognizing outstanding programs in school districts and county offices of education throughout California. The awards reflect the depth and breadth of the education programs necessary to address students’ changing needs. The goal of this awards program is to contribute to the development and evaluation of curriculum, instruction, and support services.
