Mrs. Karen DeWalt was elected to the Bakersfield City School District Board of Education in November 1994. With an extensive history of involvement in the Bakersfield Community, Mrs. DeWalt has the interests of the students at the forefront of her concern. She has held the offices of clerk pro tem, clerk, president pro tem, and president of the Board. Mrs. DeWalt was the 1995 delegate to the California School Boards Delegate Assembly. In 1999 she was the Trustee Representative to the Kern County Superintendent of Schools.

Mrs. DeWalt was born, raised and educated in Bakersfield. She was employed by California State University, Bakersfield, in the Counseling, Testing and Placement division for three years, served 14 years with Getty Oil/Texaco in the department of Finance, Human Resources and Public Affairs, and for eight years she was the owner/operator of the Popcorn Parlor's three locations.

Mrs. DeWalt's community activities include membership on the Board of the Bakersfield Music Theatre, performing in over 25 productions, past president of the California State University Bakersfield Roadrunner Club Athletic Board, member of the Republic Women Federated, and a recent appointment to the State Republican Committee.
