Franklin Celebrates National Award
San Diego State University's National Center for Urban School Transformation honored Franklin Elementary as one of eleven 2008 Excellence in Education Award winners in the nation! This award recognizes schools that exemplify the rigorous and committed work necessary to realize a high quality education for students. Principal, Carla Tafoya, Superintendent, Mike Lingo, Board Member, Lillian Tafoya, Director of Learning Support, Nancy Olcott among others attended the NCUST Symposium on May 8th and 9th in San Diego to receive the award and present their strategies for urban academic success. Franklin received a check for $1,000, a banner bearing their name and travel expenses paid to the symposium in San Diego.
Back at home Franklin Elementary took some time to celebrate their nation-wide recognition. BCSD administrators, board members and dignitaries from around the community were present including Ginger Moorhouse, Bakersfield Californian Publisher. The celebration included performances by the Franklin Glee Club and the After School Program as well as speeches by Superintendent, Mike Lingo, Nancy Olcott, Ginger Moorhouse, two Franklin teachers, and Principal, Carla Tafoya.
