To Succeed with Pride and Dignity

Dr. Juliet Thorner Creative and
Performing Arts Magnet School

A Message from the Principal,

Testing, testing, testing !  We are in the final week of instruction before the STAR Test begins. Our teachers are targeting specific standards and reviewing skills needed for successful student achievement. We need to have the students here everyday and on time. The first day of testing is April 21st and it lasts through May 2nd.   The students are being given incentives on a daily basis for perfect attendance and trying their best on the test.  Students entering late to school will be assigned to a Kindergarten class and will miss the testing session. Students perform better when they are in the classroom with their classmates on the days of testing.  Makeup tests are given but it means your child will have more than one test in a day. Please ensure that your child will go to bed at a reasonable time and start the day with a nourishing breakfast.
We are in the final days of Telephone Book Recycling.  This keeps tons of waste out of our landfills and keeps our environment clean.  Thorner kids make a difference. We are the number ONE recycler of telephone books in our nation.

Margaret Gallegos
 Principal

We are kicking off our 2007/08 Labels for Education - by Campbells and Box Tops for Education - by General Mills.
This should be a very exciting year for collecting Box Tops for Education - we have a game board that when filled with 50 box top pieces will bring $5.00 to our school beautification effort.  So look for the blue game board and start collecting!  Also, with the game board will be a listing of all General Mills and Campbells products that are eligible to collect.  Look for the display stand with info on what part to send in and places you can find the label to cut out.
If you have any questions please call Gerry Adams in the Magnet Office at 631-4568. Thanks  for all your help.

Help support Thorner!  Here are some easy ways you can help our school-

1.  Box Tops (www.boxtops4education.com)
-Clip Box Tops and have your student bring them to school.

2.  Campbell Soup Labels (www.labelsforeducation.com)
-Clip Campbell soup labels and have your student bring them to school.

3.  Used ink cartridges-send used ink cartridges (in a plastic baggie) to school with your student.

4.  Albertsons (www.albertsons.com).  If you have an Albertsons Preferred Savings Card, go to the Albertsons website and click on In the Community.  They will ask for your zip code.  Then they will ask for your Preferred Savings Card # (it is on the back of your card) and your 10 digit phone number.  Go to My Account and then go to Add a Partner.  The Thorner Booster Club¡¦s ID # is 4900126390.  It is that easy.  Now every time you use your Albertsons Preferred Savings card Albertsons will donate a percentage of your purchase amount to our school.  It doesn¡¦t cost you anything.
Also, be sure to look at your Albertsons receipt.  Sometimes (near the bottom of the receipt) there is a coupon good for extra Box Tops.  Clip that portion of your receipt and send it to school with your child.

5. Target (www.target.com). If you have a Target card or Target Visa you can designate our school to receive a percentage of your total purchase.  Again, it doesn't cost you anything!  Go to the website, then to Community Giving and then Take Charge of Education  We are listed as Dr. Juliet Thorner Elementary, the school zip code is 93306, and our ID #is 29704.

6.  Deposit all your recyclables in the Thorner recycle bins.

Check out the listed websites for more info on any of these programs!!!

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

Sizzlin’ Summer School
Bakersfield City School District is pleased to offer a summer school program even as we and other districts face significant budget cuts.
For the 2008 Summer School, the District is offering an exciting program funded by Title I to a limited number of identified students. Invitation letters will be mailed out March 20, 2008 with the application being due April 25, 2008. Because of the budget issues in California this year the focus has narrowed our summer program and will include only students identified as having the greatest academic need. Students who do not meet the criteria will not be able to attend summer school this year.
The summer program will have accelerated reading and math components designed to target students who are more than two years below grade level. The goal is to motivate students to be enthusiastic learners for the five week session. Our teachers will be trained in the accelerated curriculum and will utilize many strategies to engage and motivate the students to make the most academic gains in the five week period. The program offers positive incentives for attendance.
Summer School will be in session Monday - Thursday for 6 hours a day beginning June 9 and ending July 10, 2008 with July 3 being a holiday
.
