Henry Greve Speech Contest Rules & Regulations:

Content (30%)

Structure:
The speech is structured around a purpose. This structure includes an opening, body, and conclusion. The speech immediately engages the audience’s attention and then moves forward toward a significant conclusion.

Organization:
The body of the speech is organized by a pattern of presentation that displays the main ideas in a logical and memorable manner. The development of the speech is supported by relevant examples, illustrations (verbal portraits), facts, or analogies, which justify or elaborate to make the main ideas clearer, more stimulating, or more entertaining. Main points are bridged by transitions that enhance clarity and blend ideas to present a unified whole.

Interest:
The speech content is interesting because it is current and relevant to the needs or passions of the listeners.

Language (30%)

Choice of Words:
Language is appropriate as it relates to the purpose of the speech and to the particular audience hearing the speech. The language is vivid, specific, and definite, thereby promoting clear understanding of thought.

Grammar:
Proper sentence structure with appropriate inflections and syntax insures that the audience’s attention is directed toward what the speaker says, not how the speaker said it.

Pronunciation:
Words are pronounced correctly showing that the speaker is the master of the words being used.
 

Delivery (30%)
 
Voice:
The voice is flexible, moving from one pitch to another for emphasis. The rate of speech and volume vary to create interest and impact. The voice can be clearly heard, with the words easily understood.

Body:
The speaker demonstrates appropriate posture. Gestures appear natural and are synchronized with the voice. The audience’s eyes are engaged and facial expressions are used for emphasis and effect.

Manner:
The speaker appears credible and speaks with enthusiasm and assurance, showing interest in the audience and confidence in their reactions. The audience perceives the speaker’s “real self” as the speech is delivered.

Time Limit (10%)
Speaking time is 4½ – 7 minutes.
