Superintendent Biography

Mark Luque was appointed superintendent of the Bakersfield City School District on June 1, 2021. A product of the district, Superintendent Luque has drawn from his experiences as a child to forge new paths and partnerships to ensure student success through engagement in learning and an investment in the community. Luque is committed to providing every child with the tools necessary to succeed, equipping students with the 21st Century skills that are critically important in today’s world. Luque is currently laying the foundation of a strong culture of literacy in which every student will be able to read at or above grade level, helping to mitigate learning loss while simultaneously setting students on a path of achievement and success.
Luque is a graduate of San Diego State University (BA), and Cal State University Bakersfield (MA). He is currently in his twenty-fifth year in public education, which began in the Delano Union School District where he worked as a classroom teacher, site administrator, district administrator, and assistant superintendent. Along with his dedication to the children and staff of the Bakersfield City School District, Luque is devoted to his family and is the proud father of two beautiful daughters.
Luque has been recognized twice within three years by the local Association of California School Administrators, West Kern Charter, and Region 11, as the Central Office Administrator of the Year.
