Garza Welcomes Special Guest for “Young Author’s Fair”

March 20, 2019 - Students at Garza Elementary had the opportunity to hear from award-winning author Myron Uhlberg during the school’s “Young Author’s Fair,” an event designed to promote and encourage reading and writing skills.  The students gathered in the cafeteria throughout the day to hear Mr. Uhlberg share his childhood stories and his inspiration for writing. He also performed a few magic tricks.  To commemorate his visit, the students created hats out of newspapers to wear throughout the day.

Kimberly Moncier, 3rd Grade teacher at Garza, discussed the significance of the newspaper hats. “My class read his book, The Printer, where Mr. Uhlberg tells the story of growing up in a household where both of his parents were deaf,” she said. “His dad worked at a printing shop where they would press the newspaper and every day his dad would make a hat for him and bring it home.  There were directions in the back of the book on how to make them, we tried it, and Mr. Uhlberg loved them!”

Parents also had the opportunity to meet Mr. Uhlberg during a lunch gathering in the Parent Resource Center.  It was an inspirational and educational day where students got heard directly from the author of books that many of them had read in their classes.
