BCSD Hosts 38th Annual Coach’s Choice Track Meet

April 10, 2019 - Bakersfield City School District (BCSD) recently hosted the 38th Annual Coach’s Choice Track Meet at McKinley Elementary.  The event provides the opportunity for Special Education students with Adaptive Physical Education (APE) services from across BCSD schools to participate in the track and field events designed specifically to meet their unique needs.  Events included a Frisbee toss, ball throw and relays.

The event was created 38 years ago by BCSD retiree James “Coach” Wooster, to celebrate students who were part of the APE program.  The tradition has continued for over three decades and has become known as the “Coach’s Choice Track Meet.”  Students currently enrolled within the Kern County Superintendent of Schools classes also participated in the event.

Stacy Davis, Program Specialist in the Special Education Department at BCSD, said “This is such an amazing event.  I see all of the kids smiling, racing, trying their hardest to throw the ball and Frisbee and just participating like any other kid would.  When Coach Wooster retired four years ago, I knew I had to keep this event going for the students, families and high school volunteers, as well, who help to make this a memorable day for everyone involved.”

BCSD would like to extend a special thank you to the several student volunteers from local high schools that came and provided assistance and cheering for the event’s participants.
