BCSD Hosts “Fun Fest’ for Special Education Students

April 16, 2019 -The Special Education Department at BCSD hosted its annual “Fun Fest” at Bakersfield High School last week. Hundreds of special needs BCSD students participated in activity booths created and hosted by BHS students, which featured face painting, reading, coloring, bubble blowing, petting zoo, and so much more. Students also played basketball, soccer, percussion instruments, and jumped in a bounce house.

Anna Lovan, BHS Activity Director, said, “Fun Fest is a carnival that all of our clubs and athletic teams get involved with by sponsoring a booth and we invite all of Bakersfield City School District’s special needs classes to attend right here on our campus.”

Desiree Romero, Coordinator for the Special Education Department at BCSD, talked about the importance of having high school students help with the event, “One of the best aspects of the event is that we have BHS students be a buddy or mentor for the day.  They come out here and escort our kids to all the booths and activities.  Our students definitely enjoy this event, and I think the high school students enjoy it as well.”

More than 250 BCSD special education students participated in the event, and more than 100 BHS students ran the booths and buddied up with participants to help each participant have fun throughout the day.
