BCSD Announces Principal for New School

May 3, 2019 - The Bakersfield City School District (BCSD) is pleased to announce that Mrs. Rachelle R. Montoya has been appointed as the Director on Special Assignment to serve as Principal of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Elementary School. In this role, Mrs. Montoya will work with District and community partners to establish a strong STEM curriculum, laboratories, and professional development for teachers. She will work to lead efforts that will provide students, teachers, and parents, with the opportunity to experience 21st century learning in preparation for college and/or career readiness. Mrs. Montoya will begin her new role on July 1, 2019.

Mrs. Montoya brings nearly two decades of experience in education to this position. In her most recent role, she served as Director of Curriculum & Instruction, where she was responsible for the organization and  implementation of instructional units of instruction and goals, assessment, district professional development, State Pre-Kindergarten, Library Media and the integration of technology in the classroom, as well as, oversight of State and Federal programs. Under her leadership, the District saw an increase in teacher-driven district-wide professional development attendance to more than 95%. In addition, she and her team developed strongly aligned instructional units to support the needs of the 21st century learner and the diverse needs of the District’s population.

“I am excited to be given the opportunity to serve as the first principal of BCSD’s newest school,” said Mrs. Montoya. “I am greatly honored and humbled that the District would consider me for this role and I look forward to working with the District and the school’s future staff to develop STEM curriculum and programs to support the overall academic success of our students.”
Mrs. Montoya’s experience as a site principal provided her the necessary skills and experience to support the district’s instructional needs. She served as Principal of Pauly Elementary for nine years, where she was responsible for the development, organization, and implementation of instructional goals and objectives to improve and promote student academic achievement at the school site. She began her career in education at BCSD as an elementary school teacher in 1997 at Pauly Elementary School, and a year later, she moved to Williams Elementary. After six years in the classroom, she took on roles at the District office to further support and promote the curriculum and standards of District schools, specifically in the area of developing and implementing reading instructional materials and curriculum throughout the District. She served as Academic Coach, Program Specialist, and Supervisor for the Reading First Program, before moving back to Pauly as Principal in 2008.
“We are excited to appoint Mrs. Rachelle Montoya to her new role as Director on Special Assignment to serve as Principal of our newest school,” said Mr. Doc Ervin, Superintendent. “During her time at BCSD, she has continually demonstrated a passion for raising student achievement and has become a true leader in education. We look forward to her work in this new capacity as we work to build a 21st century learning program that will benefit the future students of King Elementary.”
Mrs. Montoya received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Liberal Studies from California State University, Bakersfield, her Reading Certificate from UCLA, and both her Master of Arts in Educational Management and Administrative Services Credential from the University of La Verne, where she currently works as an Adjunct Professor in the area of Teacher Education. She is also very active in the education community and currently serves on the Advisory Board of Point Loma Nazarene University and as a member of the Learning to Teach Committee of the California Beginning Teacher Support and Assessment Induction.
