The Bakersfield City School District announced today that Dr. Diane Cox, Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources, has tendered her intent to retire effective August 1, 2019.
“I am grateful for the opportunity to have served BCSD and worked with such wonderful colleagues, students, and families, and I will truly miss everyone,” said Dr. Cox. “Working at BCSD has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my career.”
Dr. Cox has been Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources at BCSD since 2013. During her tenure, the District has consistently held successful relationships with the labor unions, resulting in positive programs for BCSD, such as the implementation of Professional Learning Communities, professional development for administrators via the National Institute of School Leaders (NISL), preparation and planning time for teachers, and a salary cap change that allows transferring teachers to carry over their experience without losing their current salary status. Dr. Cox was also instrumental in the implementation of the first BCSD Kern Urban Teacher Residency Program, a teacher education and preparation partnership with CSU Bakersfield, which allotted a $360,000 grant that has been used to grow the program to expand practice-based training for aspiring K-8 teachers. Prior to BCSD, Dr. Cox held the position of Superintendent at Pioneer Union School District in Kings County for more than seven years. In addition, she held several other administrative positions throughout Kern County. Dr. Cox is proud to have begun her career in education at BCSD as a classroom teacher at Colonel Nichols Elementary School.
“Dr. Diane Cox has been an extremely valuable member of the Bakersfield City School District leadership team and has made significant contributions to the success of our staff, teachers, and students,” said Doc Ervin, BCSD Superintendent. “She will be greatly missed by our team. We wish her well in her much deserved retirement.”
Effective July 1, 2019, Ms. Christine Cornejo, Director of Human Resources at BCSD, will take on the role of Interim Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources. Ms. Cornejo will work alongside Dr. Cox to facilitate the transition. Ms. Cornejo has served as Director of Human Resources at BCSD for nearly 10 years and brings 29 years of Human Resources experience to this role. She has been employed by the district since 1990, having served in positions such as Personnel Office Manager, Senior Personnel Technician, and Personnel Assistant.
To further facilitate this transition, Dr. Lori Aragon, will take on the role of Interim Director of Human Resources, effective July 1, 2019. Dr. Aragon has served the district in her current role of Coordinator II, Educational Technology, Data, and Assessment since 2018. She had previously been employed by BCSD from 2000 to 2008 where she served as Vice Principal and Principal. Dr. Aragon brings 23 years of experience as an administrator, including an eight-year tenure as Assistant Superintendent of Greenfield School District. Prior to returning to BCSD, she served as Administrator of Instructional Services at the Kern County Superintendent of Schools.
