Fourth Annual Parent University Kick-Off Draws Hundreds

October 10, 2019 -Nearly 800 parents and families attended the fourth annual Parent University Kick-Off held on September 14, 2019 at Cato Middle School and Fletcher Elementary.  Each year, the Family and Community Engagement department at BCSD invites parents of students in the district to participate in this event that shares information about the year-long Parent University program. The program meets once a month throughout the school year and “offers parents and families a variety of meaningful classes and workshops that will add to their existing skills and give them opportunities for continued growth and development.”

Attendees had the opportunity to hear from keynote speaker, Adrián Calderón, Community Outreach Manager for the United States Hispanic Leadership Institute. Calderón shared an inspirational message about his upbringing, educational journey and the positive impact his mother had on him as a youth.

Jessica Martinez, Cato parent attendee, said, “Our kids our following our steps, and if we can do it, they can do it.  That got me thinking about going back to school myself, to help my student be more successful and to get my GED.”

Dee Dee Harrison, Coordinator of Family and Community Engagement, said, “We come together to honor and value the parents and students that we serve in the district.  We want them to know that this district is about partnerships, and this partnership starts with Parent University.”

The year-long Parent University concludes with a graduation celebration in spring.  Each parent that meets the attendance and participation requirements is invited to be a part of the ceremony and receive a certificate of completion for their efforts.
