Medal Winning Olympic Gymnast Visits Downtown Elementary for Anti-Bullying Assembly

November 6, 2019 - the students at Downtown Elementary attended an assembly that focused on the negatives of bullying, the importance of being kind and having a positive attitude at each stage of life.  Downtown students gathered in the cafeteria during three different sessions to hear from the event’s guest speaker Johnathan Horton.

Horton is a former Olympic gymnast who medaled in multiple events during his career and is currently a competitor on the hit television phenomena American Ninja.  During the sessions, Horton shared his stories of success, failure and perseverance.  He showed the kids the Silver Medal that he won for his performance on the High Bars during the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.  He also stressed the importance of being kind and encouraging, and how having positive people in his life has helped him pursue his dreams in competitive gymnastics and American Ninja.

At the end of the session, Horton invited all the students to visit the touring American Ninja Obstacle Course over the weekend, which gives kids and adults the opportunity to test their skills on a course that is similar to the ones featured on the television show.
