Students at Williams Celebrate National Reading Day

January 25, 2018 – Students at Williams Elementary gathered this week during an assembly to celebrate National Reading Day with special guests. Students were treated to a slide show, activities, and reading of the book “Clifford’s Birthday” by Chief Meteorologist Elaina Rusk with 23 ABC.  At the conclusion of the event, the students received a special gift – a copy of the book to take home!

The books were donated through a collaboration between the Kern Literacy Council and 23ABC Bakersfield. The event was part of the “If You Give a Child a Book” campaign of the Scripps Howard Foundation of E.W. Scripps, the parent company of 23ABC. It is estimated that more than 100,000 have been donated and distributed to students since the program started two years ago.

Laura Lollar Wolfe, Executive Director of the Kern Literacy Council, said, “This is the second year that we have partnered with 23ABC to participate in a school assembly.  They initiated fundraising efforts which purchased the books that we presented today.”
