Hundreds of Parents Graduate from BCSD’s Parent University

The Bakersfield City School District (BCSD) Family and Community Engagement (FACE) Department and families celebrated the success and achievements of parents that have successfully completed the BCSD Parent University Program. Nearly 400 parents participated in the 2017-2018 graduation ceremony on Saturday, April 28, at Stiern Middle School.

BCSD honored a total of 379 parent graduates; 216 parents received Perfect Attendance and eight received Special Honor Awards.

Parent University provides an opportunity for parents from each of the District’s schools to gain skills for one of life’s most challenging roles: parenting and advocating for their children through their academic journey. According to a parent’s selected track of coursework, they are taken through a year-long series of classes to involve and empower themselves though learning modules.

These monthly classes are designed to engage parents with topics such as navigating the school system and helping their child to achieve academic success. Social and emotional opportunities, such as mindfulness and positive parenting strategies also prepare parents to understand techniques that support them in successful parenting skills. Parent Leadership coursework also prepare parents to serve as a positive role model and key factor in their child’s academic learning.

"I feel very happy this day, having finished my studies at the Parent University gave me the knowledge to get closer to my children and get involved in their education. I want them to achieve academic success," said Adela Martinez, parent at Sierra Middle School.

The FACE Department, with the support of the FACE Liaisons assigned to each school site, collaboratively develop and strengthen the connection between families and schools through the capacity-building opportunities offered through Parent University.
