BCSD Celebrates Music In Our Schools Week

September 9, 2018 - The Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA) Department at BCSD celebrated its annual Music In Our Schools Week (MIOSW).  An assembled group of music teachers and VAPA administrators traveled to every elementary school in the district to entertain, perform music and generate interest in their award-winning music program.

Several instruments were featured during the performance, including the trumpet, trombone, flute, violin, cello, percussion instruments, and several others.  This year’s performance also included a special appearance from some of the characters of the hit movies “The Incredibles.”  In addition, several students had the opportunity to pick a percussive instrument and play with the on-stage performers.

Steve Engel, Academic Coach for VAPA, said, “Our department has been doing this event in its current format for 25 years.  The goal of the performance is to educate students about the instruments in the orchestra and to motivate students to enroll in the instrumental program or glee club.”

By the end of the MIOSW promotion, they had performed at every K-5 and K-6 school in the district, which means they will have visited 33 schools and performed to thousands of BCSD students!

BCSD and VAPA have been recognized by the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) as a “Best Community for Music Education” for a fifth year in a row.
