Polo Marquez, Principal at Emerson, said, “I think it’s a great opportunity for our students to see other students that are attending college, and to see the connection between athletics and education. It also allows them to think about goal setting for their education and future.”
The program launched on September 14th with the CSUB basketball team visiting students at three BCSD middle schools: Emerson, Curran and Sequoia. The students spent their recess time watching the team showcase their skills and also had the chance to compete with them on the court. The players also took time to snap photos with the students, and talk to them about the importance of education as well as their experience in athletics.
Zion Wallace, 8th grade student at Sequoia, said, “It was amazing playing basketball with the Roadrunners. I had a great time, and I would like to have them back.” Edward Taylor, a student at Emerson, said, “Going to college is important to me because I want to play football, and education is important because you can achieve more have a better life.”
The CSUB Men’s basketball team will be visiting all of the Jr. High/Middle Schools throughout the school year.
