Over 320 people gathered for the event, which was held at the Bakersfield Marriot on December 6, 2018. Attendees included community partners from local businesses, BCSD leadership team, BCSD Education Foundation members, amongst others. The program included a welcome by BCSD Education President, Kriti Mead, and Event Chair, Christopher Lowe, as well as an exciting, Christmas-themed performance by The Bobcat Singers from Owens Intermediate Elementary.
Attendees enthusiastically bid on silent auction baskets with many exciting themes, such as Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, Woolworth’s, and Legoland, all donated by BCSD schools and departments, as well as sponsors, community members, and supporters. There was also an opportunity drawing that featured prizes such as restaurant gift cards, Disneyland tickets, and lottery tickets.
“We are investing in the future because these children will be our leaders someday,” said Lowe. “Events like this helps the teachers immensely, because there may be activities or resources that there just isn’t funding for, and this is a way for them to get that funding.”
Doc Ervin, Superintendent at BCSD, said, “The Education Foundation plays a critical role in (BCSD’s) success. We need to eliminate any and all barriers that impact student achievement, and partnering with the BCSD Education Foundation they help us with additional dollars that we may not have as a district.”
Thank you to all the persons who donated baskets and resources to make this event happen and helped make it the best Teddy Bear Picnic yet. Special thanks to our generous sponsors, including Alta One Federal Credit Union, DWK Attorneys at Law, and Lundgren Management.
