The Bakersfield City School District celebrated “Music in Our Schools Week” with music assemblies at each elementary school in the district. The assemblies are led by BCSD’s traveling elementary instrumental music teachers. They perform a musical program that exposes students to a variety of musical styles, instruments, and curriculum correlations. One goal of the assemblies is to generate students' interest in enrolling in the district's award-winning music program.

Several instruments were featured during the performance, including the flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, baritone horn, percussion, violin, cello, and string bass.

This year’s performance also included a special appearance from some of the characters of the hit movies “Toy Story.”  In addition, several students had the opportunity to pick a percussive instrument and play with the on-stage performers

Steve Engel, Academic Coach for VAPA, said, “Our department has been doing this event in its current format for more than 25 years. We get positive feedback from school faculty every year who tell us that it is their favorite assembly of the school year.”

By the end of the MIOSW promotion, they had performed at every K-5 and K-6 school in the district, which means they will have visited 33 schools and performed to thousands of BCSD students!

BCSD and VAPA have been recognized by the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) as a “Best Community for Music Education” for a eighth year in a row.
