BCSD FACE and Nutrition Services Awarded Golden Bell

December 14, 2016 – The California School Boards Association’s Golden Bell Awards were held in San Francisco on December 3rd. Bakersfield City School District (BCSD) Team members Dee Dee Harrison, Coordinator of Family and Community Engagement and Brenda Robinson, Director of Nutrition Services were awarded with a Golden Bell for their collaborative efforts in the “Now We’re Cooking” program. They received the award in the Wellness Category under the title “Promoting Healthy Lifestyle Choices Utilizing Family Cooking Classes: Now We’re Cooking.”

In addition to receiving the CSBA Golden Bell Award, BCSD also received a $1,000 grant award for this exemplary Wellness program from Kaiser Permanente and were honored with reserved seating at the front of the ballroom with members from the company. Joining Mrs. Harrison and Mrs. Robinson in the acceptance of this coveted award was Mr. Doc Ervin, BCSD Superintendent; members of the BCSD Board of Education Mr. Andrae Gonzales, Clerk; Dr. Ray Gonzales, Clerk Pro Tem, Mrs. Pam Baugher, Member; Lisa Driskill, Special Assistant to the Superintendent, and Jeannette Casalman, Supervisor, Nutrition Services. The sponsorship funds have been allocated into an account that will continue to fund the supplies and materials used for the monthly Now We’re Cooking program.

Now We’re Cooking is an interactive, educational, monthly program developed to educate families, schools and the community on activities that focus on growing, purchasing, and cooking healthy food options while providing information on habits that pertain to our overall wellness. Creating an exciting atmosphere to prepare healthy meals bonds families while reinforcing communication, reading and math skills.

The CSBA Golden Bell Awards promote excellence in education and school board governance by recognizing outstanding programs and governance practices of school boards in school districts and county offices of education throughout California. Golden Bell Awards reflect the depth and breadth of education programs and governance decisions supporting these programs that are necessary to address students’ changing needs.
