Dual Immersion

• Bilingualism: All students learn a second language without compromising the first
• Biliteracy: Learn to read, write and speak in two languages- English and Spanish
• Multicultural Competence: Develop an appreciation for other cultures
• Colleges and Career readiness- develop skills to problem solve and reason in two languages 

1. Students currently residing in the attendance area of the school in which the dual language immersion program is offered  

2. Siblings of students already in attendance in the program

3. Students whose parent/guardian is assigned to that school as his/her place of employment

4. Students who reside within the boundaries of the District but not within the attendance area of the school in which the dual immersion program is offered

5. Students of Bakersfield City School District employees who reside outside of the District boundaries.

6. Students who reside outside of the District boundaries and meet the conditions for an interdistrict permit. 

The program follows all District Adopted Curriculum and uses Spanish as the "vehicle" of instruction. Thematic units are also used to integrate the curriculum. Additionally, there are daily and annual activities that enrich the curriculum. 

Students will:  

• Learn to read, write and speak in two languages- English and Spanish. 
• Meet the State standards in all subject areas in both languages. 
• Perform academically at or above grade level
• Work collaboratively and think critically 
• Develop an appreciation and understanding of other cultures and enhance their self-esteem

These awards are given at the end of the instructional program 

• Kindergarten- Pursuit of Bilingualism Pathway Award
• 3rd- Bilingual Conduit Pathway Award
• 6th- Bilingual Pathway Award
• 8th- Biliteracy Attainment Pathway Award
• High School- California State Seal of Biliteracy

How does the interest form work?

The interest form collects information for interested parents of students who will start TK (Voorhies only), Kindergarten, and First grade in August of 2023. Students are selected based on priorities.

How will I know if my student will be in the program?

The Multilingual Education Programs department will send you a letter of acceptance in which you will have two weeks to start completing paperwork with the corresponding school.

Will students learn how to read and write in both languages?

Yes, the program goal is to have all students fully comprehend (read, write, listen, and speak) in both languages.

My child is already in the Dual Immersion program. Do I need to register her again?

Transfer paperwork for Dual Immersion needs to be completed when your student newly enrolls in the program and when the student is going to transfer to a Dual Immersion Junior High. 

My son didn't get in this year, do I have to complete the form again?

Yes, you must complete the form each year.

I don't speak Spanish. What can I do to help my student at home?

You can listen to an audiobook and follow up with questions about what they heard.
